I’m thrilled to announce that my design concept has won the regional Queensland road safety campaign competition! Over the past few months, Jackson, Khizra, and I collaborated to create a campaign built around a message we strongly believe in: “Focus on the road, not your phone.” With our combined ideas and skills, we brought to life a concept that is now promoted across Queensland to raise awareness about the dangers of mobile phone use while driving.

Furthermore, this campaign tackles a range of mobile phone distractions, from texting to social media scrolling, which especially impacts young drivers. During our research, we uncovered compelling statistics that emphasize the urgent need for this message.

Stats That Drive Home the Message: Why We Need to Put Phones Down

According to the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads, driver distraction contributes to 29 fatalities and over 1,200 serious injuries each year. Out of those fatalities, 27.1% involved drivers aged between 16 and 24, showing the campaign’s importance for young Queenslanders.

In a recent survey by Finder.com.au (August 2024), 1,090 respondents demonstrated the shocking extent of mobile phone use while driving:

  • 📵 6% made a call without hands-free,
  • 📵 7% sent an email,
  • 📵 13% sent a text message,
  • 📵 9% checked social media and
  • 📵 7% even watched a movie.
Proudly Sharing My Design to Promote a Safer Queensland

Our team aimed to create a campaign that would resonate deeply with drivers. Using these insights, I designed a visual concept to remind everyone of what’s at stake. This campaign became a powerful way to connect my design work with a cause close to my heart.

Working with Jackson and Khizra was an incredible experience that made the journey even more meaningful. Seeing my concept chosen as the face of this campaign feels like a huge achievement, and I’m proud that my design will champion this important message.

So, let’s all make the roads safer: put away your phone and stay focused on the journey ahead. Our safety matters, and now, my design will help spread that message across Queensland.
